ISB 19th BGIC - Interview with Students

On the day, we interviewed three students with different roles. We first interviewed Liam, Chair of Human Rights Forum 2.

Interviewer: “What is the best part of being the chair?”

Liam: “It is quite cool to see how many of the delegates be completely lost in the beginning to being capable to do things on their own. The feeling of accomplishment knowing your delegates is doing well and learning new things is probably the best part of being a chair.”

Interviewer: “So far, what do you think was the biggest challenge you had to face as the chair.

Liam: “The challenge I mainly had to face as a chair is the communication between me and my co-chair, SGs, and our own delegates. As chairs, we need clear communication with the delegates and SGs, but there are so many layers of order and hierarchy to get information around. Not to mention how whether it is information coming from the SGs passed down to the chairs then to delegates, it always has the possibility of being simplified or broken down as it goes. This simplified information will then be misinterpreted, which is the biggest issue we are facing right now.”

Interviewer: “Overall, what do you think of your delegates?”

Liam: “I think my delegates have so much potential that has yet to be unleashed. I have faith that they will do well in the next few days up until the general assembly.”

The next person we interviewed is Wan Lin, SG of Environmental.

Interviewer: “How are you feeling so far being the SG for this year’s BGIC?”

Lin: “It is fun for the most part, but it is also a physically and mentally demanding task. I really love working with my chairs, though. They are not only easy to get along with, but the two of them were also chairs last BGIC, so I was not at all worried about their forum. I think that being an SG has really pushed me out of my own comfort zone to try new things. Right now, I am strengthening my social and leadership skills as we speak.”

Interviewer: “What is the biggest challenge you have experienced so far as the SG?”

Lin: “Definitely miscommunication among the SGs, I felt that sometimes when we are preparing for an assembly, we are disorganized. Some of us can be a little stubborn when it comes to making the final decisions, but I do try to compromise and work around them so we can have a fruitful meeting where everything is settled and ready for the last few days of BGIC.”

Interviewer: “Lastly, what do you think of your delegates in your forum?”

Lin: “I am confident in my forum’s delegates; however, they seem to be intimidated by me! Out of all the 8 main subs, only 3 submitted their resolutions for me to check! Haha. But overall, some of the delegates were so outgoing, and I managed to befriend them.”
